Dajore Wilson was a beautiful, eight-year old girl from Chicago who died on Labor Day after multiple gunshots were fired into the car in which she was traveling, along with her parents and an adult, family friend. All three of the adults were injured, but survived, and fortunately Dajore’s twin brother was not present in the car at the time of the shooting. A common chant we hear from “Black Lives Matter” protesters is, “Say her name!”, referring to Breonna Taylor, who was fatally shot by Louisville police in March, and “Say his name!”, in reference to George Floyd, Jacob Blake or perhaps Rayshard Brooks, all of whom either died or were injured at the hands of police. To our mainstream media, to the Black Lives Matter movement, and to our Democrat politicians, we demand: Her name was Dajore Wilson, say her name!
The statement “Black Lives Matter” is indisputable, because any and every life matters. Human life if a gift; human life is precious; and unfortunately, human life is also extremely fragile. The movement “Black Lives Matter,” however, is a much different situation, and is in fact highly disputable. We could, for example, dispute the strategy of BLM to “disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure.” We could challenge the validity of BLM’s assertion there is “rampant and deliberate violence inflicted on us by the state.” But the most egregious shortcoming of the movement “Black Lives Matter” and their activities is their utter disregard for Dajore Wilson, and those like her.
During an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon in early-July, actor and former NFL player Terry Crews was attempting to make the point that BLM should not be focused only on black victims of purported police brutality, but should include all black folks, regardless of the threat. Lemon became visibly annoyed, and resorted to talking over his own guest. “If you want an All Black Lives Matter movement that talks about gun violence in communities including black communities, then start that movement with that name,” Lemon scolded, “but that’s not what Black Lives Matter is about.” Bizarre logic and a peculiar statement, but also very revealing. The BLM movement is not about “Black Lives,” the BLM movement is entirely political, with political objectives; nothing more, nothing less.
Chicago is a city that has had a Democrat as mayor since 1931, when a man by the name of William H. Thompson ran City Hall, and Herbert Hoover was still president. There are multiple people to point to when attributing culpability for the ongoing violence that has been plaguing Chicago for decades, but there is not a Republican among them, including President Trump. As predictable as strong winds blowing through Chicago streets in January, only Democrats are elected to city offices in Chicago each November. As a result, complacency has set in, and violent deaths of Chicago’s citizenry are commonplace. This record of incompetence is why BLM and others want us to ignore Dajore Wilson and focus on Jacob Blake.
Over the Labor Day weekend, 51 people in Chicago were shot, and 10 of them died, including Dajore Wilson, but this was not an unusual weekend. There have been 523 Chicagoans murdered this year, which is already 157 more than were killed in all of 2019, and it is almost certain that 2020 will be infamous for setting a new record for homicides. Additionally, the majority of those murder victims — at least 310 of them, but probably many more — have been black folks. So, how many of those 310 were unarmed and killed by police? Zero. How many of those black lives mattered? All of them.
According to the Washington Post, there were 15 unarmed black people who were killed by police in the U.S. last year, whereas PolitiFact puts the number at 28. Additionally, the Washington Post and PolitiFact both note that the number of unarmed white people who were killed by police is significantly higher; 25 and 51 respectively. We must also note that “unarmed” does not mean “not dangerous”. Regardless, even if we take PolitiFact’s number of 28, and even if we assume that all 28 of those deaths were unjust, that means there have been over ten times the amount of black folks murdered in the city of Chicago alone already this year than were unwarrantedly killed by police in the entire U.S. for the entire year of 2019.
If black lives truly matter to the “Black Lives Matter” movement, should they not be focusing their attention elsewhere? Would it not make more of an impact if they were to work with law enforcement in addressing the violence that is ravaging cities like Chicago? And Baltimore? And St. Louis? And Detroit? All of those cities, and dozens more, are cities that have been led by Democrats for decades. They have been run by people who tell the black community they care, and then do nothing to fix the violence that is killing their children
The time has come for this insanity to stop. The American Left — which includes BLM, most Democrats, and virtually all of the mainstream media — mourns the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and they lament the injuries to Jacob Blake. Certainly, each of those circumstances is tragic in its own right and scrutinizing the events that led to those outcomes is justifiable, but consider the facts. George Floyd had ninecriminal convictions, and had both methamphetamines and fentanyl in his system when he died in police custody in Minneapolis. Dajore Wilson loved SpongeBob. Jacob Blake had been accused of sexual assault and domestic violence, resisted arrest, and was reaching for a knife when he was shot by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Dajore Wilson liked the color pink, and enjoyed dancing. Breonna Taylor was in an apartment with a man named Kenneth Walker who was shooting at police trying to execute an arrest warrant when she was killed by police in Louisville. Dajore Wilson “was an angel” according to her uncle, Reggie Ray, and we are sure she was.
Each of the events that have sparked the BLM protests and riots deserve to be discussed and examined, and if lives can be saved — black, white, or otherwise — by taking appropriate actions to improve law enforcement’s actions, then that will benefit all of society. But for the Left to pretend they genuinely care about black lives while they turn their backs on people like Dajore Wilson is despicable. George Floyd was literally buried in a gold casket, and has become a martyr for a group that only cares about their political agenda. For those of us who truly care about all American lives, including all black lives, we should hold up the precious life of Dajore Wilson as representing our aspirations to actually make our country better. We must insist that the Left acknowledge the true problems that are scourging our black communities, and exclaim: Her name was Dajore Wilson, say her name!
